White Bear Lake is a reservoir in the extreme southeast corner of Minnesota, United States. It was created by damming the river White Bear and its tributaries, located about northeast of Minneapolis. The lake has a surface area of 123 square miles (291 km2). The water level at White Bear Lake peaked in 1940 at 1,895 feet (574 m) above sea level, but it has since decreased to 844 feet (245 m) below sea level. The first residents of what is now WhiteBearLake were Swedish farmers who arrived in 1854. They named their community "Vidkunavik". In 1872 the U.S. government acquired the land surrounding Vidkunavik for $3,000 and laid out a town called Duluth on it. However, Duluth did not take hold and in 1875 the government sold all of Duluth except for a few blocks north of where present-day WhiteBearLake stands to commercial interests interested in developing lumber or coal mining properties around the new reservoir. In 1912 Congress approved plans to create an artificial lake on the site of present-day WhiteBearLake as part of a larger project to improve water supplies for Minneapolis and other cities in southeastern Minnesota. On November 17, 1913, President Woodrow Wilson signed Executive Order No. 9362 giving final approval to construction projects affecting southern Minnesota including White Bear Lake Extension Project which would widen and deepen River Whitebear from its original width at about 12 statute miles (19 km), near present-day St Cloud Township into 21 statute miles (37 km), just east of Hutchinson County line; this was also known as the Great Northern Waterway widening project although that name was dropped after World War I due to uncertainty over whether such an action would be legal under American law during wartime with different nations possessing colonial possessions within their borders Construction started on October 15, 1914 and finished on May 6, 1917 when water levels had reached 1,930 ft (547 m) above sea level at Blackwater Point while white bear populations were still low enough so hunting could occur without fear they might become captive animals subject to Slaughter Act provisions requiring disposition or capture by hunters only if they exceeded certain size limits prescribed by law
White Bear Lake was named after the white bear that populated the area. The first settler in White Bear Lake was John Doeschate, who lived in 1836. The name stuck and the town quickly sprung up around it. By 1881, there were over 100 people living in White Bear Lake. In 1916, ice cream was invented at WhiteBearLakeCottage by a woman named Lura Youngblood and her husband Wm. Kapp Slaughter.
