White Bear Lake is a small, but important, lake in the rural township of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. It was formed by damming an existing stream and reservoir in 1913. The name comes from the white bear that frequents the area. The first Europeans to visit White Bear Lake were French traders and missionaries who set out from Montreal in 1621 on a trading voyage. They named the body of water after France's flagship, La Belle Partie (the "Beautiful Party"). By 1827, the United States had acquired ownership of portions of what is now Minnesota and erected forts at two local points on the lake. Fort Snelling was destroyed by Canadian forces during World War II, but its ruins remain as a reminder of Canada's role in American history. In 1907, Congress authorized erection of a new fort at White Bear Lake to protect U.S.-Canadian trade routes through centralMinnesota along the Great Lakes region. The new fort was completed in 1909 and became known as "Fort Snelling". In 1912-13, construction began on another dam across the river leading into White Bear Lake from Hennepin County. This dam would provide power for refrigeration plants build around Minneapolis during World War I and later serve as part of interstate highways while also providing irrigation water to farmers in surrounding counties. The original dam Today is known as Dam No 1; it has been replaced multiple times since its construction and still stands today with some remains dating back over 100 years! The town developed around this new development and grew rapidly throughout World War I due to military procurement opportunities available at nearby Duluth munitions plants or foundries located just outside Minneapolis proper limits! By 1919-20, when prohibitionist legislation made liquor sales illegal throughout most of America due to concerns about public drunkenness*, WhiteBearLake had become an exclusive enclave for upper-middle class Minnesotans* (*see: "WhiteBearLake Timeline" ). Adventurous young people flocked there seeking adventure while Main Street served primarily as a retail district selling goods produced within 5 miles or so of town center including clothing stores (including Sears), hardware stores (including Hecla), ice cream parlors*, grocery stores (Griggs & Wigglesworth), restaurants*,and dance halls*. *See: "DatingBackTo1919" for more information about this period!
White Bear Lake is a body of water located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, north of downtown and east of the University of Minnesota campus. The name is derived from the white bear that was common in the area during the 1800s. White Bears were hunted by early settlers and their remains are still found around the lake. In 1872, a dam was built on White Bear Lake to create an artificial watercourse for irrigation purposes. The dam also created a large lake which eventually became part of Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
