White Bear Lake, Minnesota is a small town located in the Oneida County seat of St. Anthony. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It lies on the edge of the White Earth National Forest and is bordered by woods to the north and east, farmland to the south, and Lakes Superior andMinnesota State Road 11 to the west. The water body at White Bear Lake is about sixty-six miles long with a width of about twelve miles. The first white settlers in what would become White Bear Lake were families from Kingston, Ontario who arrived in 1855. They built a log cabin on an island in what is now known as Stanley Park which they named "White Bear". Over time other families followed until there were nineteen households living on White Bear Lake when it was designated as a national forest in 1936. One important aspect of life on Whitebear lake during its early days was fishing for walleyes which became very popular because they could be caught upstream from where most people lived. There are still some today that can be found around White Eagle dock which has been Anishinaabe name for this spot since before any Europeans came along - meaning "the place where fish jump out." Some boats even use artificial lures so you can get them while others trap them using lines made from Silver Birch tree branches! This beautiful country setting also gave rise to another type of activity once people started moving into these parts: hunting deer, moose, rabbits and many other animals that roamed free during those days without fear of being bountiful enough to feed all those folks back home! The first people to live in what is now White Bear Lake were the Potawatomi, who were known to hunt and fish in the area. In 1851, James Wirtz founded a farm on White Bear Lake. The lake was first used for irrigation purposes in 1915, and it has been used as a swimming and fishing spot ever since. The town of WhiteBearLake was established around White Bear Lake in 1922. It was originally named after John A. White, an early settler in the area. The town eventually became home to a number of businesses and homes, including a hospital, grocery store, post office, public library, school district and several churches. In recent years, however, most of the development around White Bear Lake has been residential or commercial rather than cultural or educational significance. The history of White Bear Lake begins with its location on one of the most productive hunting grounds in Minnesota. For centuries there have been different groups living near or inside what is now White Bear Lake: Potawatomi Indians from northcentral Indiana; Chippewa from central Michigan; Ojibway from east-central Ontario; other Native Americans from areas along Minnesota’s border with Canada; European settlers such as James Wirtz from Illinois; German immigrants such as Johann Friedrich Zimmermann ; Scandinavian immigrants Ole Eriksen and his family ; Danish farmers Jens Nielsen and sons Frithers Nygaard ; French fishermen Jean Lafitte ; and Swedes Gustav Nygaard , Axel Palmquist , Ivan Sverdrup . These various groups hunted deer, bear, rabbits (among others),igator (the largest animal ever seen), salmonid trout (paddling upstream over open water), ducks (including mallards and coot), walrus , caribou (the biggest animal ever seen)and other game into the early 1800s when white fur traders began trading through what is now Manitoba . By 1830 white hunters had killed more deer than any other group combined! In 1851 James Wirtz founded a farm on what is now WhitebearLake using land donated by his brother Jonas Wirtz . This marked an important milestone for Whitescar County as it became one of only two counties remaining without Territorial status at that time – both counties had been organized into districts under territorial government following Indian Removal Act (). At this time Whitescar County consisted mainly of sections of present-day Ramsey County which lay within present-day North Dakota . As whites continued moving westward throughoutMinnesota during this era they came into contact with parts of Northwestern Canada where aboriginal peoples still lived – these interactions led to gradual conversions among some Aboriginal peoples to Christianity while others remained pagan or practiced traditional beliefs incorporating elements Of Christian worship into their lifestyles.. As settlement increased along Minnesota’s northern frontier during this period many Germans started arriving – these newcomers brought their own Lutheran church services back with them which helped spur growth among local Lutheran congregations across northwestern Minnesota during this era (). Many Germans also founded communal agricultural settlements called Güterslohs () near Winnipeg on Manitoba’s eastern side – these villages grew rapidly due to excellent soils (), cheap labor (), good transportation links via wagon trains (), access to resources ()and easy access to markets ().
