As of 2000, the population of WhiteBearLake consisted only of a handful of residents living on campus at Northern State University.

White Bear Lake is a small, watery body of lakes located in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area, about 20 miles southeast of downtown Saint Paul. The name comes from the white bear that typically frequents the area and was given to it by early residents as a way to avoid being mistaken for a dark lake. The first permanent settler in what is now White Bear Lake was John Ringo, who arrived in 1851. During the late 1800s and into the 1900s much of what is now White Bear Lake was agricultural land used for growing maize, beans, potatoes, onions, pumpkins and other vegetables. In 1907 a sawmill opened on the east side of White Bear Lake and began producing lumber which led to increased development around the lake. In 1916 an airstrip was built at White Bear Lake which allowed planes to be landed on while travelling between Saint Paul and Minneapolis-SaintPaul Airport. The airport continued operation until 1957 when it closed due to budget cuts. Today there are only a few small businesses based at or near White BearsLake as most people rely on air travel for their income however there are occasional events held here such as concerts or fishing tournaments.
White Bear Lake was named after the white bear that regularly frequented the area. The first settler to live on the lake was Tryon, who arrived in 1855. By 1886, there were 66 settlers living on White Bear Lake. In 1906, the lake was dammed and became a reservoir.
