White Bear Lake was first named by the United States Survey Association in 1857. The name comes from the white bear that was seen around the area and is also a corruption of "Wabasha". The first permanent settler in White Bear Lake was James Armstrong who arrived in 1859. Other early settlers were John Glover and Ebenezer Dickey. In 1877, the town of White Bear Lake was organized and started trading with other towns in Minnesota. The town quickly grew into a major center for trade and commerce withinMinnesota. By 1907, White Bear Lake had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1916, WhiteBearLake became part of the newly created Minneapolis-St Paul metropolitan area which included most of Minnesota east of the Mississippi River as well as Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. The city of Minneapolis continued to grow rapidly around WhiteBearLake until it surpassed both townspeople and business owners in size by 1950. Over time, many small businesses closed or moved out of their original locations due to competition from larger neighbor cities such as Minneapolis-St Paul or Duluth-Mankato. However, some notable businesses that remain in current day include CVS Pharmacy (since 2005), Kohl's department store (since 2007), KFC (since 1964), Costco Wholesale Corp., UPS (until 2006), Wegmans Food Markets Inc., Applebee's restaurant (since 1984), among others
