In the early 1800s, West St. Paul was a small town in the Minnesota Territory. The area now known as Minneapolis and Saint Paul were then part of what was called the Prairie Provinces. In 1851, when Minnesota became a state,West St.Paul became its first city. The area around West Side Avenue and Seventh Street was quickly developed into a mostly residential district, with small businesses scattered throughout the neighborhood. One of the earliest firearms clothing businesses in West Side Park was Gopher Gun Store (now Gopher Sporting Goods), which opened in 1854. By 1865, Gopher had become one of the largest sporting goods stores in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. It continued to be successful until it closed its doors in 1906. At some point during its ownership by JF Strauss & Co., Gopher also changed its name to Green Bay Firearms Supply Company Ltd., which is still extant today as Green Bay Sporting Goods Incorporated. Another important firearms clothing business located on Seventh Street in West Side Park was Fenton’s Clothing House (now known as Fenton’s). This store operated from 1861 to 1865, when it merged with another local store, Hennepin Arsenal Trading Company (later Metropole) to form First National Bank of Minneapolis and Saint Paul Branch #2 (First National Bank).
