Waconia is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Waconia is the county seat of Ramsey County. It is home to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus and to a large number of small businesses and factories. The city has been called "The Promised Land" because it was promised by the Dakota Sioux Indian Nation to be their new capital after they were forced out of Standing Rock. The village that developed around what is now Waconia originated as a result of European settlement in 1855. A post office was established in 1856, and by 1860, there were ten residents living in the village. By 1865, however, only four people lived in Waconia Village; all other settlers had moved away. In 1870, James Hickey built a school for students in Waconia Village and opened it for public use. In 1875-76, Norwegian immigrant John Olsen founded an agricultural cooperative near present-day downtown Waconia which became known as Olsen's Grove; he also donated land for a town square on what would later become Main Street. In 1880, two men named Clauson started an unsuccessful business importing goods from Chicago via boat up the Mississippi River; this venture led to their discovery of coal within walking distance of their house one day while they were out fishing. They brought back enough coal to start their own mine and began trading with local miners before selling their product directly to local merchants and farmers throughout central Minnesota (this process continues today). Coal mining operations ceased shortly thereafter due to overmining but left behind many abandoned mines across central Minnesota that have been used as grazing lands ever since (the last such mine closed down in 1984). One notable event that occurred during this time period was when America's first electric streetcar line ran through town on Main Street between First Avenue South and Third Street North (later renamed State Street) – making it possible for citizens of Waconia not just to access services available elsewhere but also participate fully in American culture! A steam locomotive belonging to the Canadian Pacific Railway depot served as the train ferrying passengers from downtown Minneapolis/St Paul until 1935 when service stopped due to track reconstruction west of Minneapolis/St Paul following World War II bombings – leaving behind some long abandoned trackside warehouses still standing today! In 1906-07 entrepreneur George Gunderson established his grocery store at Sixth Avenue Northeast & Eighth Street Northwest – becoming one of only two grocery stores operating southward from Minneapolis/St Paul at that time (!); he continued serving customers well into the 20th century! One particularly notable landmark associated with early days within town came about due largely to damage done by severe weather events throughout 1916-1917: during those years saw several floods which completely destroyed most buildings within central WaconIA including churches both old wooden ones like St Peters Catholic Church #2 located north on Seventh Avenue Northeast & NE Fourth Streets NW (& its replacement), burned down three blocks south along Seventh Avenue Northeast corner Seventh Place Southwest (& Fifth Streets SW), crane demolished wood frame building northeast corner First Place Southeast(& Cedar Streets SE), brick building southeast corner Second Place Southeast(& Cedar Streets SE) total destruction amounting $2650 ($ according 2006 estimate based on structure condition only) – making it one area where entire downtown precinct lay devastated! Additionally list includes 2 homes destroyed w/$2000 each
Waconia was founded in 1851 when the Minnesota legislature approved a bill to establish a town in Dakota Territory. The territory had been organized as part of the United States in 1846, and many white settlers had moved there since then. Waconia was named for General Winfield Scott Halleck, who served as the first territorial governor.
