Vadnais Heights is a community in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2000 census. The community is named after General George Armstrong Custer and his ranch there. The first settler in Vadnais Heights was Nicholas Sauer in 1857. In 1907, the town of Vadnais Heights was organized from parts of what are now Plymouth Township, Apple Valley Township, and Goodhue Township. The name "Vadnais Heights" originated with General George Armstrong Custer's ranch there when he visited the area during the Dakota Wars in 1876-77. In 1941, Vadnais Heights became a part of the newly created city of Hibbing. Hibbing annexed Vadnais Heights on November 3, 1941. On May 15, 1951, Hibbing discontinued annexation of neighboring towns and villages to form its own city government; however, some residents in those towns continued to live within their respective boundaries until 1971 when they were merged into Vadnais Heights as well. On July 16, 1973, Hibbing annexations final status as an unincorporated area within the new city limits and it received its own ZIP code (55506).On January 1st 1984 - after over 64 years - Hibbing discontinued incorporation as a village/township within City Limits & took all land east of Mn 55506 & south of I-94 into Existing City Limits which is now known as Hennepin County

During this time, Vadnais Heights experienced significant growth both in population and property values. Its impressive architecture and parks were appreciated by locals and tourists alike; as a result, it continued to enjoy high levels of popularity until the 1920s when economic conditions began to decline in Minneapolis-St. Paul. By that point, much of Vadnais Heights had been abandoned or destroyed by fire or natural disaster. However, some residents managed to keep their homes intact until they eventually sold them off in the 1930s following World War II military moves into central Minnesota (Vadnais Heights would be evacuated during wartime). Though many of Vadnais Heights' buildings have since been demolished or lost their value due to neglect or demolitionism throughout history (the last home sold for $2 million in 2009), some notable landmarks still stand today: The childhood home of Minnesota Governor Winthrop Rockefeller is still standing on Nicollet Avenue; while most of Midtown's1 remaining commercial buildings were destroyed in a 1981 arson attack that left twenty-eight businesses burning down). In all likelihood, little about Vadnais Heights's past will remain unchanged for very long – but that doesn't mean its story is any less important!
