Vadnais Heights is a small town in westcentral Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,544 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The name "Vadnais Heights" is derived from the Dakota and Ojibwe words "vádni," meaning "place where wild game abounds," and "haiksaheen," meaning "to inhabit." The first settler in Vadnais Heights was Abram Ladd, who arrived in 1857. He founded a farm on what is now predominantly residential land east of Interstate 94 known as Ladd's Prairie. In 1865, another pioneer, George Prentice, founded a log cabin on what is now Snelling Avenue. In 1881, Vadnais Heights residents elected John Fenton to serve as their first public school superintendent. After serving for two years, he resigned to become an attorney general of Minnesota statehood proceedings being prosecuted by Governor James Buchanan Marshall. In 1886 Vadnais Heights voters selected Hyrum Ewing to succeed Fenton as their school superintendent; he served until 1893 when he moved to Minneapolis to take up a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives representing District 11A (now Twin Cities). In 1898, Vadnais Heights voters approved property-tax measures which were used as the foundation for future zoning regulations that governed much of eastern suburban Minneapolis today including Brown Lake Park and North Stonington streets northwest of I-94 near Target Field (then called Tracktown Shopping Center). These early regulations determined that all parcels within 1/2 mile (1 km) of any railroad line would be zoned for heavy manufacturing or other high-traffic uses subject to annual rezonings for subsequent decades through multiple rounds of community review which continue to this day overseen by city officials appointed by Mayor Betsy Hodges with input from business owners themselves whose properties have since been largely redeveloped into upscale neighborhoods such as Fine Arts District and Vineland Gardens adjacent Target Field Drive).

The Vadnais Heights community is a small, rural town located in the extreme western corner of Minnesota. The population was 2,572 at the 2010 census. It began as a cattle ranch and mining village in the 1870s and grew rapidly after the opening of the North Dakota Railroad in 1887. In 1935, Vadnais Heights became an incorporated town with a population of 4,813. The once-thriving agricultural industry has been replaced by retail and service businesses in recent decades. Today, Vadnais Heights is one of the most diverse communities in northcentral Minnesota, home to people from many different backgrounds and cultures. The history of Vadnais Heights begins with its location on what is now known as Rancho de las Animas Indian Reservation. The land that would become Vadnais Heights was first occupied by the Menominee tribe during pre-contact times. The area around present-day Vadnais Heights was part of what is now south Dakota Territory when it was acquired by Major George Armstrong Custer during his ill-fated expedition into Mexico City in 1876. Custer's forces were encamped near modern day Rapid City when they were invaded by Mexican troops on March 25, 1876. One night, while under attack from Mexican forces led by General Acosta, Custer ordered his cavalry to retreat into Sibley County in order to reach safety before dawn the next morning. Upon their return to camp that night,Custer's officers discovered that most of his horsemen had been killed or captured; only five men including Custer survived this engagement.[1] In 1887, Northern Pacific Railway extended its line through central Minnesota and discovered rich silver deposits along its route northward from Canada overland from Aberdeen to Rapid City Junction (now Pierre). Captain David Lindsay leased land east of present-day Hastings on which he built a farm named Lindesmith Settlement for 10 sheep and 10 horses at $2 per acre ($40 per head) payable annually.[2] Lindsay's ranching operation quickly became successful due to good grazing ground and access to timber resources closeby (the first private timber company ever established inMinnesota).[3] In 1910 John Ault founded Ault Sawmill & Mill Company on land adjoining Lindsay's farmstead; this company would continue operations until 1984.[4] Lindsay sold his interest inLindesmith Settlement to George Wohlgemuth who renamed it “Vadnais Heights” after himself and fellow railroad officer Augustus Heron Vandenberg (1850-1924), who had served as assistant superintendent for track construction for NRG during its early days alongMinnesota’s Twin Cities region[5]. Vandenberg had helped designNRG’s initial plans for Minneapolis/St Paul[6], later becoming general manager for NRG Gateway Division west of St Paul[7]. Wohlgemuth continued leasing parcels from Vandenberg untilhis death in 1924,[8][9] leaving behind a small but significant portionofheir holdings within today's boundaries of Vadanais Hills Village Incorporated.[10][11] A new era began forVandenberg Farms when World War I began;rapid city industrial production surged due largelytothewar effort Boeing plant being developed therefrom 1919-1925 [12][13][14][15]). The first settlers in Vadnais Heights were Captain David Mitchell and his wife, Margery. Captain Mitchell was a privateer who sailed from England to the Minnesota Territory in 1836. He and his wife established a home on what is now the east side of Vadnais Heights. They had two children: David B. Mitchell and Margery A. Mitchell. Captain David's daughter, Margery A., married John Prentice in 1840, and they raised six children together: John Prentice, Mary Prentice, Sarah Prentice, James Prentice, and Charles Prentice. The family moved to the west side of town in 1851 when their father died; they continued to live there until 1865 when they sold their home and moved to Griggsville. In 1865, Captain David's son-in-law John Prentice built a seemill on the creek that flows through Vadnais Heights; it is still in operation today as Pioneer Mill No. 2). The mill was used for grinding corn for local markets until 1954 when it was converted into a hotel/motel called the Lodge at Cedar Rapids (now Cedar Rapids Marriott). In 1907, the mill became part of Davenport Mills Inc., which became part of United Wholesale Grocers Incorporated in 1951; this company eventually merged with Archer Daniels Midland Co., forming Archer Daniels Midland Corporation (ADMCO) in 1987.) In 1957 ADMCO began production of agriculture products at its new facility near Maple Grove; this plant continues to produce these products today as ADMCo Agroindustrial Production LLC.). In 1996 ADMCo acquired a controlling interest in MeadWestvaco plc.; MeadWestvaco operates snack stores under the name "Hilton Garden Inn" throughout North America.)
