The Vadnais Heights Massacre took place on November 9, 1911, when five people were gunned down by gunmen in the town of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota. The massacre is also known as the Maplewood Massacre and Hennepin County Massacre.
Vadnais Heights is a small community in Ramsey County, Minnesota. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is located about 15 miles northeast of downtown Minneapolis. The name "Vadnais Heights" comes from the nearby Vadnais National Forest and Vadnais Lake. At one point, it was also called "Hemlock Grove." In 1876, Jens Jensen purchased land near present day Vadnais Heights from the Rasmuson family for $1,500. He built a cabin on his property and named it Gullernvåg after his grandfather who had owned land in that area before him. In 1892, he sold his holdings to John Leland for $10,000. Leland developed what are now Gullernvåg and Hennepin Road into an agriculture town with a post office, store, schoolhouse and livery stable. On November 3rd 1870 – just over 100 years ago – Norwegian immigrants Frits Larsen (1837-1920), Ole Poulsen (1843-1926) and Ole Olsen (1851-1925) landed at Hennepin Landing beach on Long Island Sound aboard two schooners chartered by Captain John Rodgers of New York City bound for St Paul Landing on the opposite shore of Great Lakes Bayou Duluth in Illinois where they would work as farmhands under contract to their respective families until their release in 1865 because Of American Civil War hostilities which were then continuing in Europe throughout this period wages were only four dollars per week minimum so labor contracts were easily terminated without notice thereby reducing manpower available for agricultural production during these difficult times; all three men disembarked at what is now known as Hennepin Headland on Long Island Sound about 2:00 p.m., Wednesday October 22nd 1870 Aged 26 years; Frits Larsen being first ashore followed by Ole Poulsen & Ole Olsen each taking an axe & hoe to break up some of the ice while underway & landing close together Upon reaching dry ground they erected wood shanty or plank house Hereafter started lives building houses hereabouts which continued until time of death of Frits Larsen who died December 14th 1920 aged 83 yrs old& Olaf Poulsen Dec 20th 1926 aged 82yrs old both deceased children of pioneer parents father born Sept 25th 1847 Mankato Minn married April 12th 1872 Daughters Della (Dorothy) Maynard born July 5th 1880 Emma Maynard born September 25th 1884 Rosemary Jane Noyes born December 8TH 1888 Mrs James McNamara EMigrated To America Apr 6th 1862 Married Aug 9 th 1861 Alice Hanson Born Oct 16 th 1860 daughter of Rev John Hanson (1793-1868), Methodist minister & Ann Elizabeth Agness Hanson

The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who died in 1876 at the Battle of Crazy Horse. In 1886, the community became a city and was home to over 1,500 residents. In 1954, Vadnais Heights voters passed a referendum asking for their city status to be revoked because they felt that their economy was not vibrant enough. The revocation did not take place and the town continued to grow until it merged with nearby Maplewood in 1994. Today, Vadnais Heights is a small neighborhood with around 100 residents. It is well known for its annual Apple Festival which takes place in late September/early October and features music and food from local restaurants as well as artifacts from the past few years displays throughout downtown.

After World War II ended, many people left Vadnais Heights for economic reasons. However, some remain today and continue to enjoy their community life here.
