It was renamed Vadnais Heights on July 1, 1886 after Major-General John Custer's last battle with the Sioux Indians at Bighorn Pass near present-day Vadnais Heights. The name honored General Custer's brother Maj.-Gen., David Sibley Custer (1815–81). The first post office in Vadnais Heights opened on September 15, 1857, and operated until it was discontinued on December 9, 1865. A store and hotel were built soon afterward on Clark Avenue northwest of downtown by George Wirths and his son Samuel Wirths for local farmers and their families who had come to Minnesota during theBleeding Kansas Era to escape violence there at home. The business started as a general store with three rooms upstairs and downstairs inside an old millrace running through the center of town which Mr Wirths had owned since before he founded this wide open country back east." From 1860 until 1963 when it closed due to lack of customers, Gopher Mail served as the primary mail carrier for Vadnais Heights residents using horse drawn buggies from Station 2 adjacent to what is now First Lutheran Church across Central Ave from Gopher Mutual Insurance Company building (now Park Place Apartments). A new Post Office Building was completed in 1963 which still serves as our Main Post Office today!

Vadnais Heights is a census-designated place in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The name may be derived from Vadnais Lake, which lies to the east of the community. The first settlers in this area were German immigrants who arrived in 1857. They named their community after General Friedrich von Vadnais, who had commanded troops at Silesia during the Napoleonic Wars and then served as a military governor of that region. In 1872, a post office was established in Vadnais Heights and mail was transported from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania by horse and wagon until 1888. By 1901, there were three churches in Vadnais Heights - one Congregational and two Lutheran - as well as a school and farmstead. The village formed when several small communities merged to form it on July 12, 1909. In 1914 gasoline stations began to appear in the town; these became popular because they allowed customers to buy fuel without having to go into gas stations near where they lived or went shopping. By 1925 there were twenty-four businesses in Vadnais Heights with an average of five employees each. A large factory complex built by Northern Electric Company around 1931 added jobs but also produced high levels of pollution which caused health problems for many years after its closure; however, recent research has shown that this plant did not cause any public health issues when used properly

Vadnais, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later awarded the Medal of Honor. The population of Vadnais Heights grew rapidly after it was founded, reaching 2,000 by 1900. By 1920, the population had increased to 10,000 and reached 20,000 by 1930. The city of Minneapolis became aware of the importance of Vadnais Heights during this time and began to invest in its development. In 1935, Mayor John Ahern announced that Vadnais Heights would be annexed into Minneapolis as part of the city’s growth. This happened due to pressure from other municipalities within Minneapolis which saw their towns becoming overwhelmed with development and wanted their share in the city’s growth. The townspeople did not enjoy being forced out of their homes and lobbied hard against annexation. However, they eventually gave up and were absorbed into Minneapolis when it took over their land. Today, there are only a few remaining buildings from when Vadnais Heights was an important community filled with people who loved their country and made a difference in what it meant for everyone around them
