Vadnais Heights is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,431 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The name Vadnais Heights comes from two places in the area: one on the east side of Vadnais Lake and one near what is now Highway 169 on the west side of the lake. The first place was named after Colonel George Washington Vail, a British general who fought in the American Revolution and was later honored as a hero by President James K. Polk. The second place was named for General John Custer, who died during clashes with Sioux Indians near present-day Iowa City, Minnesota in 1876. In 1865 Isaac Buell built a cabin here on his farm along what is now Uptown Avenue (former Highway 169). In 1868 Elisha Stevens opened up a grocery store in what is now Main Street (Uptown Avenue). In 1892 Jethro Gibbs opened up his own grocery store on Main Street just south of current day First Avenue (Uptown Avenue). That same year also saw construction begin on what would become Vadnais Heights Elementary School and Middle School; these buildings were completed in 1896 and 1902 respectively. The post office at 608 Second Ave., opened in 1907, closed its doors in 1961, and reopened as an annex to nearby Morningside Heights Post Office which closed its doors in 1959 due to lack of customership. On July 1st 1870 Captain Edward Payson left for Dakota Territory arriving at this point about 21 miles due north of Winnipeg
The Vadnais Heights area of Minneapolis was once a thriving farming community. The area now includes the neighborhoods of North End, East Side, and West Side. The first settlers in this area were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1855. They started a dairy farm and later built a sawmill and gristmill in the area. In 1876, the original town site was platted out and named Vadnais after Captain John Vadnais, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Minnesota Territorial Legislature. In 1886, the first school was built in what is now North End. In 1912, it became part of Minneapolis proper when it was annexed by the city. Between 1913-1916, the land around present-day Vadnais Heights was used to build Wahlgren Stadium for the University of Minnesota football team. In 1927, Wahlgren Stadium was replaced by US Bank Stadium which still stands today.
