Stillwater is a small town in southwestern Minnesota. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The Stillwater post office has been in operation since 1885. The town was named for still water, aname that is mentioned in two different places: one as Stillwater Creek and another as Stillwater Lake. The first settler in what is now Stillwater was David Healy, who founded a cabin on the banks of Stillwater Creek in 1881. He married Anna Thorburn and had six children. In 1901, John Fetterman purchased land from David Healy and began to build a sawmill on the creek bank. By 1915, Fetterman had erected several log buildings near his mill which became known as the “Fetterman Hotel” after him and his wife lived there until their death in 1935. In 1920, Wm Epps bought large tracts of land east of Stillwater with the intention of developing it into an agricultural community; however, he never got around to doing so. In 1941, Hedda Jenson donated her farmstead northwest of town to the city for use as an open-air recreation area; though it remained unoccupied until 1984 when it was leased to Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Department for use as a youth sports complex called ParkPointe II (now known as Target Field). In 1951, Harry Olson graduated from Stroudsburg State Teachers College with a degree in education and built an elementary school on his farm northeast of town which servedstill water residents until 1957 when he moved out to Bellevue where he died in 1985 before his school could be closed down because no one wanted to live there anymore! After years of being without an official name or designation (the village used various names over time),Stillwater became officially recognized by the City Council on October 14th 2009 when they voted 3-1 to change its name to “Downtown Minneapolis” due to its growing popularity within metro Minnesotan culture and economy! Downtown Minneapolis has quickly become one of downtown's most vibrant areas fostering new businesses opportunities along with more affordable housing options available . Currently there are plans underway by Downtown Minneapolis organizations such as MNUFC football club MNUFC stadium redevelopment project that will see many streetcars running through downtown during games making it even more vibrancy filled!
