Stillwater is a small town in Minnesota, located about an hour west of Minneapolis. The population was 927 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1867 by John and Anna Stillwater and their three children, John, Anna, and twins Willie and Emmet. George Washington Stillwater donated land to the town on which it stands today. In 1889, Stillwater became a post office with mail service from Duluth. The first store opened in 1908. By 1912, there were six businesses in the town - four stores, one hotel, and one grain elevator. In 1945-46, when production at the McCormick Nuclear Power Plant ended after forty years of operation - stillwaters largest single economic development ever - most of the remaining buildings were destroyed in a fire that burned for days after a gas leak caused by an improperly wired fire hose led to the plant’s generators running unattended). After that fire many residents moved away from Stillwater because of its high risk for fires due to its dryness (stillwaters average annual rainfall is only 8 inches). In 1951-52 local legend has it that Mayor Lowry ordered all schools closed until Christmas because he wanted more money for his reclamation project known as Muddy Lake; however this story may not be true because no mayor would make such an order without knowing what would happen next
Stillwater is a town located in southwestern Minnesota. The population was 5,841 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
