In 1957, Stillwater became home to Stonewater Elementary School which served students from kindergarten through eighth grade during school days and day care during weekends or holidays; however, due to budget cuts in 1960, Stonewater Elementary closed its doors for good in 1961 when all public schools across metro MN were consolidated into one system under Governor John Schaefer's "Public Schools Act".
