Gun targets have been a part of Stillwater, Minnesota for over 100 years. The first target was set up in 1875 by A.B.Curtis and P.H.Leeds at the old post office on First Street. This original target consisted of a single piece of wood about 12 inches long and 2 inches wide, with a simple crosshairs design. At first, these targets were used to shoot pigeons or dogs, but eventually became more popular as shooting galleries for the town's resident farmers and hunters. In 1907, the first state-of-the-art gun target system was installed in Stillwater by Fenton Manufacturing Company Limited. This system consisted of two sets of tracks that could be moved around to create any desired size hole or area for shooting at your favorite game animal or human subject! From then on, gun targets became an integral part of local social events and Gun Club meetings throughout the community. Today, there are still many local residents who enjoy using this unique form of recreational gunfire!

The practice continued until 1845 when a new type of weapon called a breech-loading rifle was invented which allowed for rounds to be fired one at a time without having to reload. This made it much more efficient for artillery, which could fire more shots per minute!

On July 1, 1905, Stillwater became a city. The population of the city rose from 1,500 to over 20,000 by 1910. The arrival of the railroad led to new development in the city and on July 1st 1915 the first post office was opened in Stillwater.
