Stillwater is a small town in southwestern Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It lies along MN-27, about 15 miles (24 km) east of the state capital, Minneapolis. The community began as a logging outpost on the edge of a now-vanished glaciated massif called Stillwater Hills. The first post office was established in 1881 and the first school was built in 1885. The name still refers to the community today: "still water" is derived from an early settler's observation that "the clear waters below were so still and clear that one could see a frog or fish swimming by." In 1902, Stillwater became part of what would become Ramsey County; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a city with its own mayor and council. In 1979, Stillwater annexed adjacent communities of Maplewood and Bloomington to form a new city government. Today, Stillwater is known for its annual summer music festival - which attracts over 100 bands each year - as well as its rich history and culture. According to local lore, the first set of lights ever installed in still water came on July 9th 1915 when some fishermen discovered oil shale under the surface during their angling expedition; this led to the founding of the Stills Water Petroleum Company Limited which operated from 1915-1925.
