St. Peter is a small town in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located just east of the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and is included in the Saint Paul–East Grand Forks, MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now St. Peter was Isaac Tichenor, who arrived there in 1827 and named it after his patron saint, Peter. In 1851, pioneer Jacob Olson built a cabin onosset Ridge near present day St Peters Boulevard and donated land to become what is today the only incorporated community in Whatcom County outside of Seattle – and one of only two communities in northwest Minnesota with its own post office (the other being Wadena). In 1903, when Whatcom County was established as a new county within Minnesota, St Peters became its seat; but due to economic reasons it lost that position to East Grand Forks by 1909. In 1912(), however, it regained its seat when what is now Ramsey County was created from what were then portions of Whatcom and Hennepin counties.. On January 1st 1915, when Hastings County was created from parts of Dakota and Lyon counties., St Peters became its Seat also . On November 3rd 1918 - days before World War I began - a group of soldiers from nearby Duluth volunteered for service in Europe during an emergency government mobilization called "The Great War". When they returned home later that year their battalion had been redesignated as Company D3/2nd Battalion 5th Infantry Regiment (Saint John's Own) Canadian Expeditionary Force which became known as The Winnipeg General Hospital Company C Newfoundland Regiment (TF 142) nicknamed 'The Devils' because they wore red Devils helmets while fighting on the Western Front.. This event helped inspire residents to name their local community after a saintly figure like Blessed Protection or Our Lady Of Strength- something they did not have much choice about since these companies were not officially recognised by Canada until many years later!
In 1887, St. Peter was the first town in Minnesota to be founded. It was named for Apostle Peter, who had died in Rome a few years earlier. The community was established on an old trading post near the present day city of Minneapolis. The post served as a base of operations for early settlers and soon became a major center of commerce and trade within the region. In 1923, St. Peter merged with nearby Springdale to form the city of Minneapolis.
