The town of St. Peter, Minnesota was founded in 1856 by Danish immigrants. The name of the original town was Nyeby, but the post office moved to present-day St. Peter in 1858. The first church was built in 1859 and the first school in 1868. The population of the town increased rapidly from 350 residents in 1860 to 3,500 in 1870, and 5,000 by 1880. A railroad came through the town and job opportunities opened up for newcomers. In 1905, a silver mine opened up near St. Peter and quickly became one of the most important businesses in the community. By 1920, there were over 1,000 people living in St. Peter and it had become an important center for mining and other industry. During World War II, many citizens served their country as military personnel or civilians. Most notable among these are Harry Weems (a veteran of World War I), who worked at a munitions plant until his retirement; his son John Weems (a decorated recipient of the Bronze Star Medal);and Gertrude Weems (wife of Harry Weems). Many buildings were destroyed during the war such as Nyeby Post Office which still stands today with its original box room complete; however, other structures like First Presbyterian Church have been replaced with newer versions over time including a new annex which was completed in 2006 adjacent to Pillsbury Elementary School on Main Street
In 1854, St. Peter was founded as a Lutheran settlement in what is now Minneapolis. The town grew rapidly and by 1872 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1907, the city of Minneapolis was incorporated and St. Peter became part of it.
