The community growth was due to its location on the Saint Francois River and its close proximity to other settlements. The early settlers were farmers who raised corn, wheat, and cattle. The population of St. Peter peaked at around 1,500 in the 1920s but has since declined significantly. There was no school or store within a radius of 10 miles so local residents gathered together to create one with help from traders from nearby towns. They baked loaves of bread and sold them door-to-door as snacks while they awaited news of an opening up in central Canada/Minnesota called Wickenburg Landing where they could purchase goods before moving onwards to Canada East via Fort Snelling for onward travel across North Dakota into Dakota Territory! Within a year there were four homes: Ole’s house on Main Street; Hans’ house east of Church Street; Jens’ house west of State Road 5; Rasmus’ home north side of Main Street just past High School Building! This initial group had difficulty living off meager resources as their catch from river fishing included carp, catfish, herring etcetera which they boiled until it became thin gruel which they then ate raw! In addition to these rural farming activities there were also some timbering operations taking place at this time near present day Highway 12 between Pembina Lakes National Park and Thief Lake Christine National Preserve where logs were being transported downriver for processing into lumber products such as posts & beams etcetera Ultimately this led to increased competition among various entrepreneurs for land and prices escalated leading eventually to bankruptcies amongst those who did not have access or opportunity to sell their holdings! In 1875 Reverend John Leland moved his family from Sauk Rapids Iowa back eastward through Wisconsin Territory towards what would become St Peter after preying upon religious refugees fleeing violence on their way southward following the American Civil War including many women childrenriers named Mary Ann Faust who had married Elijah Smith from Illinois just prior arriving inMinnesota! Many male refugees followed suit soon afterwards including Methodist minister Luther Vandross who settled near present day Interstate 94 Exit 25A about two miles northeast of today’s downtown St Peters ! By 1880 there were over 100 people residing within a ten mile radius surrounding present day downtown St Peters making it one of America’s largest towns by that point with commercial enterprises such as grocery stores bakery shops banks post office etcetera all prospering thanks largely to transportation improvements brought about by railroads like the Northern Pacific Railroad!! One important event that took place during this time period happened July 4th 1881 when 2nd Lt Jesse Buell made landfall on shoreline adjacent offshore island he named “Island Number Two″ after Battle Of Island No Name Heading Toward Duluth From Lake Superior resulting in United States victory thereby ending Ulysses S Grant’s attempt At reconquest Of Canada East & Upper Great Lakes !! This pivotal event helped solidify Minnesota identity & importance within United States national borders!! It also began Minnesota Territorial government development process culminating with admission into United States as state November 16th 1882!!!
