The first gun targets in St. Peter, Minnesota were built in 1871 by Major John P. Brownell and Company. The guns were used to protect the town from Native Americans. The town was founded on a small island in the river Mississippi, so the guns were needed for defense against attack from upstream.
Pope Francis visited St. Peter's Parish in Minneapolis on May 24, 2015. During his visit, he praised the parish for their dedication to Christ and their community spirit. He also announced that he would be making a pastoral visit to the parish in early 2016. The parish is located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis and its history goes back to 1885. The first church on this site was built by Father John Hennepin, who served as pastor from 1885-1892. In 1911, Father James Ludden purchased the property and began construction of what is now known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In 1951, Father John Neumann became pastor and added a new wing to the cathedral which today houses the chapel where Pope Francis was married on May 24th, 2015. St. Peter's Parish has always been committed to providing quality Catholic education for its residents. In addition to educating children in grades K-12, they offer religious formation classes for adults as well as adult Sunday School services. They also have a variety of cultural events throughout the year including plays and concerts during Lent/Christmas season;MXviFest (a family event series);and Holy Week services which are open to all faiths!

The history of St. Peter, Minnesota can be traced back to 1852 when a group of Norwegian immigrants arrived in the area. From that time until 1912, the town was known as Hesselbogen (“Hesselberg”). In 1912, the town became part of the Dakota Territory and was renamed Stillwater after stillborn son of Minnesota Governor John Dennison. The population of Stillwater dwindled until it reached its low point in 1916 when only six residents lived there. In 1932,Stillwater lost its status as an incorporated municipality and reverted to a territory under the jurisdiction of the Dakota Territory government. In 1951, Stillwater became a city and has been increasing in population ever since. Today, St. Peter is one of the most populous cities in Minnesota with over 120,000 residents. The city is home to many cultural attractions such as museums and theaters which are open to the public for visits every day from May through October.
The first settler in the area was Peter M. Jensen, who arrived in 1851. The town of St. Peter was founded in 1875 by Minnesota Territorial Governor James L. Guthrie, and it became a city on July 1, 1907.
