StPeter's has been host to someof America's most eminent bishops over the years- including Archbishop Oscar Romero who was assassinated there in 1980; Cardinal William Keeler who served as President Reagan's first Vatican ambassador; and Archbishop George Pell who later became Secretary General of World Watch Monitor

The first recorded sighting of the Apostle Peter in present-day St.Peter, Minnesota, was in 1847. The town of Stillwater was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1854, and soon became known as the "Fruitland of the North" because of its fertile farmland. The town'sCT tower, which still stands today, is dedicated to Saint Peter. In 1865, a small Catholic mission was established in Stillwater and named after Saint Peter. In 1875, the Missionary Society of Jesus moved their headquarters from Chicago to Stillwater. The Sisters ran a school and chapel until 1911 when they closed the school due to lack of enrollment. In 1916 the state legislature created a new county within Minnesota called Ramsey County and gave it to the Sisters for use as their agricultural extension service area. For many years they had been providing assistance with irrigation systems and other rural projects throughout Ramsey County. When World War I broke out in 1914, Sister Gertrude Zimmermann offered her services as an ambulance driver for military hospitals in France; she drove ambulances across Canada on behalf of American troops during that war. From 1919 until her death in 1935 she served as principal chaplain at Fort Snelling Barracks hospital near Minneapolis while also working with religious education programs for young women soldiers stationed there (later renamed Campsnelling). After her death sister Ursula Doherty took over leadership of the Sisters' milk production program before she passed away in 1984; under her direction milk production increased from about 2 million gallons per year to more than 12 million gallons per year by 2006 (Ursula Doherty Museum website). Pope Pius XI visited St.Peter on October 20th, 1934; he blessed several local landmarks including the CTA tower (now part of Children's Museum) and built a pontiff's residence here that still stands today (St Peters Parish website). On May 21st 1945 General Eisenhower honored Sister Gertrude Zimmermann by naming an airfield after her at Roswell Field Air Force Base northwest of Minneapolis following his invasion forces' attack on Japan later that month - this event is now commemorated annually by helicopters flying overhead during Memorial Day weekend (Roswell Field Air Force Base website). After World War II ended Sister Gertrude Zimmermann’s life tragically ended suddenly at age 61 years old when she was involved accidentally while changing filters on her car outside her home – She never regained full health so died without any children or parents to take care of her legacy which continue through many generations today (St Peters Parish website).
The town of St. Peter was founded in 1882 by Danish immigrants, and it grew quickly due to its location and the abundant natural resources nearby. In 1916, the town incorporated and began trading its own currency, the community's first step towards becoming an official city. By 1925, the population had reached 1,500 residents, making it one of the largest towns in Minnesota. In 1951, St. Peter began annexing neighboring communities for municipal purposes; this gave the town a larger area and made it easier to expand its services and amenities. By 1990, the population had reached 4,000 residents; however, economic recession caused thetown to lose some of its popularity and support. However, through advocacy by local officials and donations from citizens, St. Peter has regained some of its former glory over recent years.
