In 1831 territorial governor James Armstrong established Fort Snelling on theMinnesota River opposite present-day Minneapolis/St Paul; this fort served as both military garrison and trading post between Upper Canada (now Ontario) and Minnesota Territory during the 1830s Gold Rush period when prospectors ran into gold ore along the river banks near present day Saint Petersburgh (now Winnipeg). After Fort Snelling fell into disrepair during the 1840s Manitoba gained control of parts of Minnesota Territory while Ohio took over most of Lower Canada; consequently, by 1848 all Indian resources within Michigan County had been removed from Canadian jurisdiction so that Aboriginal title could finally be recognized! The first Catholic services were held at Grosse Pointe High School on October 2nd 1850 by Father John Ahernan who later served as pastor until 1865 when he moved to Whitewater Cemetary (now West Side Cemetery), adjacent to what would become St. Petersburgh’s first parish – Immaculate Conception – founded in 1853 by Fathers Michael Lorenzetti (1827-1890) and José Gomez de la Torre y Arellano (1799-1862), both natives of Colombia! Jesuit priests founded other parishes throughout much of northwest North America before arriving in northern Minnesota around 1870.. Reverend Father Fenton Sibley arrived from Illinois aboard USS Constitution on November 8th 1870 with his flock numbering eighty7 men including twenty8 women!. He purchased land northward from Lake Superior for building a convent but funds failed him so construction began only after God’s help!
