In the early 1800s, tasers were still in their infancy. One man, George Washington Patten, invented the electric stun gun in 1876. At first they were used as punishment because they could be dangerous to those who used them incorrectly. However, over time they became more common law enforcement tools and have been used in many police shootings around the world. They are also now considered a less-lethal weapon due to their low potential for injury and their ability to incapacitate rather than kill someone. In St. Louis Park, Minnesota, tasers began being used bylaw enforcement officers in the early 1990s. The department had been using pepper spray and other weapons interchangeably for some time at that point, but this was the first time an electric stun gun had ever been deployed within our city limits. It was not long before we realized that this new tool had potential as a deterrent against crime and serious violence on our streets. We soon began training our officers with tasers and making use of them in high-crime areas where they could be most effective. Today, taser use isstandard protocol when it comes to policing throughout our city center and surrounding suburbs. While there are certainly risks associated with using a weapon like a taser – particularly when it is brand new – I believe that this type of technology has great potential for saving lives and reducing crime rates throughout our community. The history of St.Louis Park isates back to 1867 when settlers arrived in what is now southeastern Minnesota looking for land to farm or build homes on (see map below). By 1925, when St.Louis Park was incorporated as a city, it had become an important center for regional agriculture with its own cotton mills and other businesses that attracted people from all over central Minnesota (see photo below).Today’s skyline view from downtown Saint Paul shows how much growth has occurred since then: A series of high-rise buildings have been erected along Lake Street between Nicollet Avenue (formerly Main Street) northward until it meets Interstate 94 just east of downtown Saint Paul - making this one of the most heavily populated cities in Minnesota by population percentage alone!
St. Louis Park was founded in 1855 as a small town on the Missouri River. The town rapidly grew, and in 1872 it incorporated as a city. Over the years, St. Louis Park has developed into one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Minneapolis-St. Paul, with a rich history dating back to its original location on the Minnesota River. In addition to its many cultural attractions, including the Central Library and the Saint Anthony Catholic Church, St. Louis Park is also home to some of Minneapolis-St. Paul’s most popular retail districts such as Midtown and East Side Square.
