On July 3, 1871, the city of St. Louis Park was organized as a town. On October 1, 1872, the first post office opened in the community. The population of St. Louis Park grew rapidly during its early years and by 1880 it had reached 10,000 residents. In 1889, a new church was built in the community and named after Saint Louis Parish in Louisiana which had been donated to St. Louis Park by parishioners John Ahern and his wife Catherine Ahern. In 1903, a school was built in the community andnamed after Dr. Luther Martin who had served as pastor at Our Lady of Fatima Church on River Road in neighboring Minneapolis for many years before moving to St. Louis Park to become its first superintendent. The current elementary school building was originally constructed in 1919 and is located on West First Street near what is now State Highway 169 (now US- 55). It has been used as both an elementary school and high school since that time. In 1916, due to World War I efforts by local businesses and individuals, flour milling began within the town boundaries with mills located on South 5th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue; these operations continued until 1922 when they were transferred to Minneapolis because of wartime restrictions on flour production west of Twin Cities limits
