He built a log cabin near present-day Snelling Avenue and Rice Street in what is now downtown St. Louis Park. In 1859, Ahern married Margaret Kinnaird, daughter of Alexander Kinnaird of Edinburgh, Scotland. They moved west to what is now suburban Maplewood where they raised six children: John (1860-1941), Mary (1863-1945), Alexander (1865-1935), Brigid (1867-1947) Helen (1869-1964), Patrick McGillivray Kinnaird (born 1870) and Kathleen McNamara O'Neill (born 1872). In 1898, when St. Louis Park was created as a township within Ramsey county by an act of the state legislature, it had only 1 inhabitant – John McNamara – but it soon became a center for Catholic social services in Hennepin County with over 100 residents working out of its one schoolhouse during those early years. Today’sSaintLouisParkMall has more than 20 tenants including Macy’s Department Store and Sears Holding Company; Jamba Juice; Denny’s restaurant; Target; KFC; Dick's Sporting Goods store; and several convenience stores including 7-Eleven/CVS Pharmacy and Winnie's Grocery Stores Incorporated which operates since 1984 as Dollar General Corporation In 1961 the population reached 4,000 when brothers Denis & Donny Kapp donated land adjacent to their family farm east of town for use as an all-purpose Aviation School Test Range called "Kapp Field" which hosted flyboy contests throughout Minnesota until 1978 when that activity ended due to budget cuts by then Governor Jesse Ventura . The current day airport also includes a hangar used by local farmers for storage purposes during bad weather periods while still serving as an agricultural research center providing access tovarious breeds of livestock
In 1857, St. Louis Park was established as a community in Minnesota by Jesse P. Loring and others. The name is derived from the French word "plan" meaning "a piece of land." In 1872, the first post office was established in the community. In 1890, the first Norwegian Lutheran church was built in St. Louis Park. In 1907, a public library was opened in the community.
