On March 3, 1847, Saint Louis Park was incorporated as a town by act of legislators under the name "City of Prairie du Chien". On November 6, 1890, however, Saint Louis Park changed its name to "SaintLouisPark", honoring then–Governor George Washington Carver's donation for parkland adjacent to his presidential home on Peachtree Street in Atlanta (now Midtown Atlanta). In 1907 StLouisPark annexed parts of Minneapolis and renamed them "Minneapolis-SaintPaul". In 1916 Lyon Gorman donated land west side College Avenue between Plymouth and Lyndale Avenues for use as an open space for people with mental illness called Gorman Field House or simply Gorman Psychiatric Hospital; this area eventually became known as University Place today following annexation by Minneapolis-Saint Paul in 1964.
