St. Louis Park is a small town in the state of Minnesota, located about twenty miles east of Minneapolis. The population was 8,824 at the 2010 census. It lies just northeast of the city of Minneapolis on Highway 20, two miles east of Interstate 35E and six miles west of Lakeville. The name "St. Louis Park" is derived from nearby Hennepin County seats, Golden Valley and Stone Mountain, both named for General David Ewing Stroud (1795-1868). In 1879, when Hennepin County was created from part of Dakota Territory, Stroud was chosen as its first county commissioner. The first settler in what is now St. Louis Park was Levi Coffin in 1858. He built a cabin on an orchard near present-day Plymouth Road and Maple Avenue. In 1860 the first post office opened in what is now Saint Paul; it was called simply "Hennepin." In 1863, Hennepin County became part of Dakota Territory and so did Stroud's Seat; however, he continued to serve as its commissioner until his death in 1868. In 1875 –76 Land agent John Sibley surveyed much ofwhat exists today within the town limits as well as portions of Minneapolis – with land that would later be developed into downtown Saint Paul by local businessmen Edwin Pritzker and George Wohlgemuth – making it one of the largest land surveys ever done in Minnesota history. At this timeSaintLouisPark had a population just over 100 people primarily engaged in farming and ranching activities along with some lumbering operations outside town limits which continued until after World War II when forestation took hold throughout much central Minnesota followed by an economic downturn which led to many farms being sold off/closed down including several within StLouisPark itself with few residents remaining inside either during or after the heydayof logging & manufacturing here also Prior to this there were numerous businesses serving timber /mining customers here such as: Griggs Lumber Company (founded 1865), United States Timber Company (founded 1870), Northern Pacific Railway Co.(founded 1895), Koppers Mills(founded 1896) & others The current incarnationof this once very small town has emerged following various revitalization Initiatives over recent years designed principally around tourism but also encompassing community policing services RV camping taking place year round on undeveloped open site adjacent to municipal golf course providing many opportunities for recreational activity other than driving distance away most notably ice skating rink open summer weekends

In 1838, the city of St. Louis Park was organized as a town in Minnesota. The town was named for the French city of Saint-Louis. The first settler in St. Louis Park was John Gillett, who arrived in 1839. Gillett built a cabin on the present site of City Hall in 1840 and began to grow crops. In 1845, he became the first white man to be elected as a justice of the peace in Minnesota. In 1850, Gillett married Lydia Carlson and they started a family. They also operated an inn on First Street near Eastern Avenue until their death in 1907. In 1865, St. Louis Park became part of Minnesota and it has been continuously inhabited since then by Minneapolis residents including current Mayor Betsy Hodges
