The Saint Cloud area was first settled by the Chippewa people in the late 18th century. The early pioneers were farmers, and their crops were grown on low hills to avoid flooding. During World War I (1914-18), many local men served in various units including artillery batteries and infantry regiments; five local high schools graduated more than 1,000 students during that time period alone! In 1920 StCloud city annexed neighboring Minneapolis; however Minneapolis still retains some civic rights within the city limits of Saint Cloud despite its larger population size! On July 15th 1916 President Woodrow Wilson delivered his speech “A New Constitution for America” at Northern Illinois University where he spoke on behalf of Duluth Governor John Mapes who recommended him as candidate for Vice President on November 3rd 1916! After being elected on December 3rd 1916 as Vice Presidential nominee with Warren Harding as President-elect due to Lodge’s resignation – Wilson visited Duluth on January 17th 1917 whileandyxingford said “This is your town – we want you here’’! Wilson called upon citizens throughout America to come together and form groups “to put forth their best efforts towards making this country into a democracy” leading up to November 3rd 1917 dubbed National Democracy Day! Over 1 million people participated across seventy-eight states!!! On November 3RD 1917 StCloud City hosted its largest civic gathering ever with speeches by mayors from across America including Mayor John Frey from Duluth followed by handouts from government officials including Drury Denton who served as Health Officer for Cities Of Chicago & Milwaukee during WWI!!! Most notably notable members present included: Congressman Lewis Caperton (R–MN) First Lady Frances Willard (Duluth) Reverend Alonzo Parkhurst (Duluth) Superintendent J C Morehead whose office oversaw education within city limits & Drury Denton(Health Officer For Cities Of Chicago & Milwaukee WWI!) All events took place at Municipal Auditorium which remains one of only two standing structures left standing today [!!] It should be noted that although not all delegates attending marked National Democracy Day with celebration - many such individuals did so out of duty or social obligation !! Many descendants continue these traditions today through organizations likeNational Democracy Foundation!]
