By 1851, there were over 1,000 people living in what is now St Cloud County with businesses ranging from furriers to lumberjacks manufacturing furniture, shoes and other products here in this growing country town site that bordered upriver on Duluth until just after World War II when it became part of Minneapolis-St.Paul as its industrial center while downtown Duluth grew increasingly Gentrified into an upscale shopping district known as Third Street South after major city investments by local businessmen during that time period gave growth momentum to this once small frontier town near Lake Superior due primarily to its location - convenient access by rail (via Saint Anthony Falls) for transportation led many entrepreneurs here including those who founded Minneapolis-based Mallard Paper Products, National Broadcasting Company (NBC), Hyundai Motors (later Kia Motors), Coca Cola Refreshment Center (later Heineken) just east of downtown St Cloud - one early example among many similar businesses sprouting up across North American cities during that era given widespread Niagara Falls lead power along Highway $12 called State Road 42nd Avenue today renamed Snelling Avenue - all making it easy for entrepreneurs like these not only survive but thrive as their industries expanded rapidly thanks largely to available cheap land, natural resources and constrained few development regulations relative to those days

In 1881, St. Cloud became the county seat of Ramsey County, Minnesota. The city was named after General David Dixon who founded the town in 1851. At first, the area around present day downtown was rural and agricultural. But with the arrival of railroad companies in the early 20th century, development began in earnest. By 1915, St. Cloud had a population of over 100 people and had built up a large commercial district on First Avenue and Main Street. Today, downtown is home to several major businesses including Macy's department store and Target Corporation. In 1916, when Minneapolis-Saint Paul annexed St. Cloud into their city limits, it became part of what is now known as Minneapolis-St Paul County (MSP). The name change did not mean that everything changed for downtown St. Cloud however; many businesses continued to operate under their original names until they were forced to close by regulation from MSP officials during the late1990s and 2000s (euphemistically called "the Great Recession"). One important aspect that has remained constant throughout downtown's history is its function as an interchange point for both local and regional buses which run between Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport and various colleges within MSP as well as other areas in north central Minnesota (such as Apple Valley). Additionally, since 1955, when a new light rail system called Metro Transit opened along University Avenue in downtown SaintCloud., streetcar service has been available from stops near First Avenue South and University Boulevard with connections to surrounding neighborhoods including Maplewood/University Heights/Bloomington/Eagan etc.. Finally, there are numerous art galleries located within or adjacent to Downtown SaintCloud.; some dating back more than 50 years while others have come about relatively recently given its growing cultural significance within MSP overall!
The first store in St. Cloud, Minnesota was opened by George and Martha Hager on October 1, 1868. The original store was a two-story building that housed a grocery and clothing store. In 1971, the City of St. Cloud built a new shopping mall on the site of the old Hager hardware store which included an extra floor for a bookstore. The Barnes & Noble bookstore closed in 1998 and became an Olive Garden restaurant until it closed in 2006.
