In 1867, Minnesota became the 28th state in the Union. The St. Cloud gun sights company was founded in 1872 by two entrepreneurs, George and Lorenzo Smith. At first, they built rifles only and manufactured them at their own shop on First Avenue North in downtown St. Cloud. However, demand for firearms began to grow throughout the state so they opened a store on Third Avenue South in 1897 and continued to produce firearms until 1949 when production moved to an new plant on University Avenue in Minneapolis. The company produced a wide variety of guns including pistols, revolvers, shotguns, rifle barrels and ammunition products. Amongst its most famous arms were the Model 1901 revolver which saw service with both American and Canadian forces during World War I; as well as the Model 1922 rifle which was used by both the U.S. Army and Air Force during World War II. Despite its production losses during World War II (due to competition from better-produced firearms from other companies), the company continued operations until it went bankrupt in 1949 due to increased competition from newer Manufacturers within the firearm industry. Today, there is still a small amount of equipment remaining inside of the old factory building that is still used for manufacturing ammo products such as high-capacity magazines and suppressors

The history of St. Cloud goes back way before that date! The area where today's St Cloud is located was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1700s and early 1800s. One account says that when Europeans first arrived in this area they found several small villages scattered around what is now downtown St Cloud. It wasn't until after European settlement began that people started building permanent homes hereabouts. Some early pioneers who lived near what would later become downtown St Cloud were David Hauser (1785-1850), Johann Friedrich List (1792-1864), and Jonas Salk (1904-1973). In 1851, St. Cloud was founded as a small community on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town rapidly grew and by 1860 it had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1865, the city was incorporated and in 1874 it became one of the ten cities in Minnesota. In 1907, St. Cloud became the capital of Minnesota.
