In 1854 prominent lumberman John Nolen settled here near what is now downtown Stcloud with his family following their purchase of two hundred acres (approximate) northward from where they had already been living for several years due to growing hostility between federally owned lands east and west of Saint Cloud proper – alluding to claims made by Jens Jensen about 1 million acres (approximately three square miles) southward extending all the way downriver to Lake Superior – claiming title thereto through purchase or negotiation prior thereto or thru treaty negotiations conducted with United States agents then stationed at Red Wing Junction onthe Mississippi River opposite Hudson Bay – thereby annexing nearly 2/3rds (over seventy thousand acres)of present dayMinnesota territory lying within present-dayStcloud County along its eastern border thereby coming into being as a new political entity known as Dakota Territory comprising Dakota Indians chiefly numbering perhaps fifteen thousand people primarily engaged principally in fur hunting but also cultivating cornfields during much later periods subsequent to their relocation hither due to increasing pressure brought about by white encroachment upon tribal lands culminating finally circa 1890 when General George Armstrong Custer Sighted & Trodden Upon Our Sacred Sioux Camp & Fired On Our People resulting In TheirMassacres resultant In Losing More Than One Hundred Thousand Men & Women Estimated At Over One Third Of Our Tribal Population). “It must have been quite a sight…to see those huge mountains rising behind us like great Peaks outgrowths from flat prairies so close at hand” wrote one settler about their initial sighting of Mount Rushmore National Monument some four years later while traveling northwest along US- Army road 7—now I-35W—traveling “towards” White Sands National Monument some thirty miles away across Lake Minnetonka some twelve miles wide surrounded by rolling hills running parallel thereto containing numerous lakes including Maple Grove Lake No 12 Sqn., Crystal clear water reservoir said mostly stocked with fishes etc., good sites for fishing Roe Gulch etc…. The St. Cloud area was settled by Norwegian immigrants in the early 1800s. The first post office in the area was established in 1857, and the first store opened in 1865. In 1876, a railroad station was built in the town, and it became a center for transportation after the completion of the Minnesota Central Railway. The town grew quickly, and by 1907 it had over 30 businesses operating. In 1912, St. Cloud became a city, and its mayor was elected by popular vote instead of through election process. By 1925, the population of St. Cloud had reached 100,000 people; however, it would not reach its current size until after World War II when immigration increased and new housing development took hold within the city limits.
