By 1860, Stcloud had become one of the most prosperous towns in Minnesota thanks to its strategic location at an intersection of two major routes: One led eastward through Canada to Chicago while another led southward through Duluth to Minneapolis.[4] As demand for goods increased along these two routes, businesses grew rapidly around downtown StCloud until 1870 when construction began on what would become Saint Cloud State University which opened its doors just over a decade later on October 1st1887[5]. Today’s vibrant community has evolved significantly over past centuries due to its proximity to downtown Minneapolis/St Joseph’s Mall (the largest mall in north-central Minnesota), world-class education institutions such as Saint Cloud State University (one of only ten colleges or universities located outsideicago), great restaurants including Red Lobster®,[6][7][8][9], easy access to interstate highways I-35W and I-94A (two minutes from downtown),[10]and several professional sports teams including NHL's Wild [11][12], AHL's Lakehead Devils [13], MLB's Twins [14], WCBA's North Stars [15], USFL's Blue Bombers [16],and numerous small businesses dotting every corner imaginable!
