In 1892, a man named George Smith founded the Armoury and Rifle store in what is now St. Cloud, Minnesota. The Armoury and Rifle store was the first hardware store in town and it was also the first gunsmith shop in town. In 1903, the Armoury and Rifle store moved to its current location on Third Avenue. At that time, the armoury offered pistols, shotguns, rifles, ammunition, and other firearm supplies to customers of all levels of experience. The armoury also served as a training ground for new police officers. In 1922, Grote & Sons Hardware Store became part of Armoury & Rifle Store Ltd., which later changed its name to National Armory Corporation (NAC). NAC produced firearms for both military and commercial purposes until 1992 when it merged with Winchester Arms Corporation to form Winchester Incorporated (Winchester). Winchester later became one of America's largest arms manufacturers. Over the years, Winchester has produced many types of ammunition including shot loads such as buckshot®, birdshot®, shotgun rounds (large calibers), rifle rounds (large calibers), pistol rounds (small calibers), armor piercing rounds (.308 caliber or larger), target ammo (.25 inch diameter or smaller) and reloading bullets for handguns ( .22 LR or .243 Win.) Ammunition from Winchesters has been used in many wars around the world including World War II where it was used in artillery duty as well as being used by law enforcement agencies throughout North America. Today much of what Winchester produces is exported to countries such as China and India where demand exists for high quality American made ammunition products.
