In 1916, South St.Paul became a city with a population of 25,000 people when it joined Minneapolis-Mankato as part of an amalgamation effort following a referendum vote by residents! In 1967, after almost 60 years as a rural community with few services available outside of its own borders (the closest grocery store was 8 miles away), South St.Paul voters passed an ordinance creating municipal services within their limits! This led to the growth of such entities as street cleaning, trash collection, fire prevention/fighting; parks & recreation; zoning regulations allowing for mixed-use development along arterial streets throughout downtown; and even began plans for light rail service through town! On October 3rd 2017 marked 100 years since city incorporation – during this time many changes have taken place both within and without South St.Paul! On July 1st 2020 Mayor Garry McCarthy announced that Light Rail will become operational in South StPCommunication District starting July 2021 providing relief for commuters currently using buses or trains which can take up to 2 hours to get into downtown Minneapolis!!!
