By 1839, South St. Paul had a population of around 150 people and was part of the Dakota Territory. In 1862, the American Civil War began, and South St. Paul became one of the few towns in Minnesota to choose to stay neutral during the war. The town went back to its original name after the war when it merged with other northern towns under the new name of Minneapolis (though it continued to use its former German name). In 1865, South St.Paul become an incorporated city and remained so until 1925 when it reverted back to its original name once again
