Shoreview is a small town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shoreview is located on the shore of Lake Minnetonka and had a total population of 3,524 as of 2000. The community was named after nearby Shorewood, Wisconsin, which was first settled in 1836 by Norwegian immigrants and their families. The community began as a farming village on the east side of lake Minnetonka near present-day Shorewood Avenue and Interstate 35E. In 1908, developers erected a high school and other businesses on what became known as "the Prominence" overlooking the water to provide an aristocratic setting for their new town. In 1940, when statehood was granted to Minnesota, Shoreview became its capital city with its own government and mayoralty. The post office closed in 1957; however, it reopened in 1960 under new name: Shoreview Heights from then until it changed again to its current name in 1984 after purchase by local businessman Everett Hargrave from Stinson Electric Company's parent company Western Electric Corporation (WE). Hargrave spent $3 million renovating the old schoolhouse into a modern day hotel/conference center that still stands today as one of the most popular tourist attractions in town - called simply "Hargrave's". As suburban housing developments grew closer to town over time and access to public transportation diminished or ceased altogether (including buses between Shorewood Heights and downtown Minneapolis), many people left Shore View for more affordable neighborhoods such as Maple Grove or West Side Park Township (now Bloomington) during the late 1980s through early 1990s while they awaited redevelopment projects that never took hold because of lack of money or political will within both townships’ legislatures (MinnPost article). The city was founded in 1885 by George Wohlgemuth and others as an agricultural community on the shore of Lake Superior. In 1924, it became a resort town with its own hospital and casino. In 1971, it became a city after being annexed by St. Paul. The population increased from 4,902 in 2000 to 7,371 at the 2010 census; however, this growth has been largely due to annexation by Minneapolis-St.Paul and its new Central Library complex within Shoreview's boundaries which brought in 3,500 additional residents since 2000
On Shoreview, Minnesota's east side, there is a history of mining and farming. The area was first settled by the Menominee people in the 18th century. They wereUIyaa-Creekshore people who spoke Potawatomi language. In 1851, the United States Geological Survey established a survey station on the shoreline of Lake Superior to study the area. By 1870, land around present day Shoreview had been surveyed and homesteaded by American Indians. Mining began in earnest in the 1880s, and soon large amounts of coal and other minerals were being found. In 1912, Shoreview became a city when it was incorporated as a result of an act of Congress. The city limits were expanded in 1974 when it annexed the neighboring town of Plymouth. By 2000, Shoreview had an estimated population of 74,813 residents (of which 26% are Hispanic or Latino).
