In 1916, Shoreview became a part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area and its economy changed as more people moved into the area to work in manufacturing or service jobs in larger cities such as Minneapolis and St. Paul. The population peaked at over 100,000 in 1970 before slowly declining over the next few decades due to suburbanization and other factors
