The Shoreview area was long inhabited by the Dakota, Ojibwe, and Winnebago Sioux. In 1851, a group of Norwegian immigrants named the Nordstaedt family settled in what is now Shoreview. The Nordstedts were the first white people to open a grocery store in Shoreview. They also started a school and built a sawmill on Black Creek. The town quickly grew and by 1870 it had over 100 residents. In 1887, the first electric railway reached Shoreview from Minnesota City; this made the town an important transportation artery. By 1900, Shoreline had more than 200 businesses and 2 banks. In 1916, whenMinnesota became an all-white state, shoreline voters approveda white only zoning ordinance for their community. In 1925, the post office was moved from Minneapolis to Shoreview; this made it one of the few communities in Minnesota that had both a postal service and an official municipal government. In World War II, shoreline residents helped build radar arrays on campus at universities like Minnwest State University (now Saint Paul) and Minnesota State University (Mankato). Many of these antennas remain in use today as part of airport security procedures
