Shakopee was named after General George Washington's aide and friend Colonel John Shakopee. Shakopee is located at . According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 477 people, 207 households, and 150 families residing in the town. The population density was 16 people per square mile (6/km²). There were 269 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 2% African American. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 0% of the population. Shakopee, Minnesota is a small town in the far north-central United States. It is bordered by the Canadian province of Manitoba to the east and south, and by the states of Wisconsin to the west. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1854 by Norwegian immigrants as a farming community on an area of forested land that had been granted to them by Hudson's Bay Company executive James Watt. In 1907, Shakopee became part of Minneapolis and Venn diagrammed its boundaries with other towns in Minneapolis County. In 1959, Shakopee annexed what are now northeast Minneapolis and northwest St Paul precincts from Hennepin County. Shakopee is one of only two American towns that have never lost its city status (the other being Maynardville, Illinois). Its citizens continue to identify themselves as "shakers" or "smokers". The town has a number of businesses including a brewery (Smokey Joe's), several restaurants/cafés (including Hefty Burger joint), two libraries (one branch open 24 hours), a post office (opened in 1903) and two hospitals - one for veterans Affairs and another for general surgery. The first school in Shakopee was built on Vine Street in 1854; it served both children and adults until 1881 when it moved to what is now Second Avenue South. A new school building was erected on Main Street between 1865 and 1868; this building still stands today as part of Shakopee Municipal Building #2. There were also three churches located in Shakopee during its early years: First Presbyterian Church on West Third Street between Vine and Second Avenues N., United Methodist Church at Seventh Avenue North between Vine and Eighth Streets E., Andover Baptist Church at Ninth Avenue North between Vine Streets N., which burned down around 1870 but was rebuilt soon after near East Tenth Street N.). In 1907, when Shakopee became part of Minneapolis, it annexed what are now northeast Minneapolis and northwest St Paul precincts from Hennepin County; these precincts formed the nucleus around which present-day ShakopEE grew up. Schools serving these areas closed down beginning in 1958 due to budget cuts within Mayor Farley’s administration. Starting anew as an annexation unit under Minneapolis City Council jurisdiction – with Smoky Joe’s Brewery looming large – SHAKOPEE began slowly rebuilding itself into its current form over ensuing decades while maintaining close ties with downtown Minneapolis through trade associations, civic events/meetings, library programming etc.; additionally keeping Smoky Joe’s Brewery open for business day & night so that customers could come into town for beer tastings! As mentioned before however some aspects still maintain their old ways such as having “Thursday nights off” where all Shaker businesses closed except Smoky Joe's which continued operating despite not having any employees during weekdays- similar to how many cities operate nowadays!
