Shakopee, Minnesota is a town in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 2,537 at the 2010 census. Shakopee was founded in 1881 by Danish immigrants. The first post office in Shakopee was established in 1883. The community of Shakopee developed around a sawmill and gristmill on the east side of the Mississippi River. In 1891, a group of Scandinavian immigrants built a school and dispensary in what is now Shakopee. The first store in Shakopee opened its doors on December 15, 1892. By 1907, the town had six stores and twelve businesses. In 1916, ShakopEE incorporation as a city made it easier for residents to get government services such as water supply and streetlights. The original mill closed operations in 1922 but continued to be used for agricultural purposes until 1984 when it was gutted and replaced with two new mills that together produce over one million dollars worth of flour each year for local grocery stores and other food processors across the Midwest. In 1923-1924 an important development took place within the community when Dr. John Wessels bought land just south of town from Swede Larson for use as a psychiatric hospital known then as "Morgenstern". With this purchase came much needed housing developments which continue to this day along with jobs available to those who work there including nurses and doctors during high season months

In recent years, however, many businesses have left or been forced out of Shakopee due to its challenging economic climate.
