In that year, a group of men from Shakopee created the Dakota Rifle Association to promote rifle education and hunting opportunities for local farmers. The association’s first meeting took place on November 3rd and 4th at the home of Mrs. Anna Olsen. The purpose of this initial meeting was to explore ways to improve hunting opportunities for locals and provide financial support for such endeavors. The following year, on November 10th, 1876, another group of men from Shakopee met to discuss methods for manufacturing firearms and storing them safely. This meeting also determined that a soft gun case would be an ideal storage container for firearms. A few weeks later, on December 15th, 1876, a company known as “Cottonseed Firearms Manufacturing Co.,” was formed with the goal of manufacturing soft guns in Shakopee. James Buchanan Polk became President and new postal regulations caused Shakopee to lose its post office privileges on July 1st 1875 due to lack of activity; however, it reopened on October 16th after being given permission by Congress under Act No 98-539 (). Shakopee officially became a town on January 15th 1907 when it annexed Dakota City to its east side In 1951, ShakopEE passed an ordinance establishing bilingual education within its borders as one way to promote social integration within their community. The town continued to grow through annexation of neighboring communities during the early 1960s until reaching its current size including portions of Blue Earth and Anoka counties

In recent years, several initiatives have been undertaken to improve public transportation options within and around town including creating bike lanes and construction of an express bus service between downtown Minneapolis and Shakopee Heights mall using electric infrastructure rather than gasoline buses
