Shakopee is known for itsatoops, a type of climbing tree found only in Shakopee and several other communities near its location on the Mississippi River. The first people to live in what is now Shakopee were the Ojibwe. They had been living there for many years before European traders arrived in 1638 and began trading with the natives. In 1721, French explorer Pierre Chouteau divided what is now Wisconsin into two parts - one including what is now Shakopee County, Minnesota, was given to France while the other included Racine County which was given to Sweden. The land that later became Shakopee was part of this second group and it remained so until 1862 when it was acquired by Minneapolis-Stribling heirs who renamed it "Shakopeed". The area around present day Shakopee was first settled by Europeans in 1854 when John Sibley came across a band of Sioux Indians called the Ojibwe on his way from Green Bay to Fort Snelling on Lake Superior. He built a cabin here and started trading with them. In 1865, Sibley's son-in-law, Isaac Noyes set up a store here which quickly became successful as an early Means Street grocery store chain shopkeepers throughout Minneapolis were soon selling goods from their stores all over central Minnesota. In 1868, Noyes married Anna Ladd and they moved their family to this new community which they named after their maternal great aunt "Sarina", who had died suddenly just prior to their move. Sarina had been born in 1812 near modern day Fargo, North Dakota and her father had emigrated from England some 25 years earlier seeking opportunity and fortune on American soil where he met Native Americans who taught him about fishing and farming techniques while he lived among them for three years before moving back home with his daughter – Sarina being his only child with wife Elizabeth Ann (Benson) Noyes (1824-1901).
