The Rolling Block Rifle was eventually replaced by the modern bolt action rifle in 1872 when Reverend Elijah Anderson developed and patented his new design which became known as the Anderson Rifle. The first firearms company in Shakopee was established on July 1st, 1889 when Wm Hennepin Manufacturing Company was founded by Mr. & Mrs. Hennepin with the help of their son Homer Hennepin Jr.. This company specialized in manufacturing firearms including shotguns and pistols under license from various gunmakers around the country. In 1898, Mankato Tool Works joined Wm Hennepin Manufacturing Company along with other manufacturers to form what would become one of Shakopee's most successful businesses during its early years; Mankato Tool Works produced shotguns and handguns until it closed its doors in 1979 after producing over 2 million products over sixty years!

By 1860, there were six families living in Shakopee. By 1865, there were twenty-eight people living in Shakopee. In 1869, Samuel Davenport arrived and built a flour mill on the Hiawatha River. The first school in Shakopee was opened in 1870 as a one room schoolhouse with twelve students. In 1872, a second school was opened and it became known as Sibley School after its original teacher, Ebenezer Sibley. The first post office was established at ShakopEE on November 10th, 1875 by Elijah Guthrie with ten dollars worth of postal stamps from Minneapolis. In 1880, two new churches were built: First Methodist Episcopal Church (now part of St Paul) and Presbyterian Church (now part of Minneapolis). In 1886, railroad tracks were laid through town and settlement increased rapidly; by 1890 there were over 200 residents inSHAKOPEE! During World War I, many men served within the local military forces including Private Harry Larson who died during battle on December 8th 1918 while serving with Company C 5th Regiment Minnesota Infantry at Belleau Wood Field near Paris MN; Corporal Clarence Aiken who died on October 1st 1916 during trench warfare near Vimy Ridge France; Sgt Alfred “Sandy” Olson who died January 20th 1915 during action at Hill 262 near Arras Belgium; Pvt Geo Fenton who died October 25th 1914 while serving with Company K 2nd Battalion 38th Infantry New York State National Guard Unit attacking Turkish trenches east of Ypres Belgium Captain Eldon Laddie commanding A Company 7TH Battalion 26TH UPPER RANK REGIMENT American Expeditionary Forces killed or missing action August 1917 when his unit advanced across open ground towards German lines southeast of Mount Sorrento Italy while attached to 3rd battalion 502nd Parachute Infantry Brigade Combat Team
