The first settlers in Shakopee were farmers and their families who started moving to the area in the early 1800s. By 1870, Shakopee had a population of around 100 people. Over time, Shakopee became an important manufacturing center for rifles and shotguns in the state. In 1966, Shakopee was named a city by the Minneapolis-St Paul Mayor John Tunney. Today, it's known for its growing music scene and its rich history which can be found on both sides of the river. The history of rifles and shotguns in Shakopee began with pioneers who husbanded their land and hunted game around their properties. One such pioneer was James McKay who moved to Shakopee from Illinois in 1858. McKay started out as a tailor and later opened his own shop which he continued to run until his death in 1913. While McKay is often credited with starting rifle manufacture in ShakopEE, it actually got its start several years earlier when George Wickersham bought some land east of town and began making muzzleloader rifles using local timber resources. Wickersham also built one of Minnesota's first sawmills back then! In 1865, Tom Smith set up shop near where current day Macy’s now stands downtown on Third Street West (now First Avenue). Smith made barrels for many different types of firearms including rifles and shotguns as well as pistols. His business prospered until 1869 when he lost his license due to trade regulations at that time! During this time period there were several other gun manufacturers operating within walking distance or less of Shakopee including Fenton & Company (later renamed Winchester), Sheaffe Bros., Jorgensen Brothers (later renamed Brownells) and others! Many individuals associated with these businesses donated property or money towards building new factories or expanding existing ones along First AvenueWesterly Street between Seventh Street South (now Avenue D)and Eighth Street North during this period! This increased production led to increased demand for rifle barrels from shooters all overMinnesota! One particular Ammunition Manufacturer located just south of Wakopa Lake used locals fishing trips aboard their boatloads of mussels they collected during seasonal fisheries operations on that bodyof water while ashore! This company was later christened “Mussel Bay Ammunition” after their success getting government seals approved to export product from Canada!). With better transportation options available thanks to railroads coming online throughout northwest Minnesota during this era, barrel production gains stepped up significantly! Barrers made by Mussel Bay Ammo eventually went into high demand by armorers all across America because it consistently produced quality products at competitive prices compared to other brands - even today!!!

In 1907, The Great Northern Railway tracks were moved out from under ShAKOPEE Bridge over Spring Creek and new tracks were built through SHAKOPEE; this caused an even larger influx of settlers into SHAKOPEE and its population reached 615 people by 1915. The First World War led to a significant decrease in residents throughout all towns within Minnesota due to military service; however, Shakopee remained largely unaffected due to its small size compared to other municipalities within that state. However, during World War II there was an increase in residents because shakopolite munitions production began at nearby White Sands Ammunition Plant (now known as MKEK). This made shakopolite oneofMinnesota's leading exports for many years following World War II In 1968-1969 SHAKOPEE lost its municipal water authority when Twin Cities Municipal Utility District took over most municipal services within their area including water supply and pipes for both city residents and rural areas Today shakopolite production still takes place at White Sands Ammunition Plant however much less then before
