Shakopee, Minnesota is a small town located in the heart of rural Minnesota. The population was 5,835 at the 2000 census. It is the only village in Ramsey County and one of only two villages in Dakota County. Shakopee is home to Lake Superior State Park and to Shakopee Heritage Museum which gathers materials from local history. Shakopee also has a post office that opened on July 1, 1882. The first settlers known to live in what is now Shakopee were three men who came overland from Canada in 1851. They named their new land "Shakopee" after one of their leaders, John Shakopee. In 1857, another group of Canadians arrived and named their land "Ramsey". The area around present-day ShakopEE was part of this former township until it was organized as a separate County by Act of Congress on February 3, 1889. ShakopEE became an incorporated village on December 15, 1912 when it joined Ramsey County as its second municipality. On January 1, 1916, it lost its charter as a Village because it did not meet the requirements set by county officials for incorporation into larger municipalities such as Minneapolis or St Paul. However, the Township continued to exist until it merged with Ramsey County on January 1, 1935; however all Shaker activity within its boundaries continued uninterrupted until that time .
