At the time, Shakopee was a small farming community with a population of about 100 people. The first store in Shakopee opened in 1875. By 1909, Shakopee had a population of over 500 people and boasted three banks and two churches. The history of guns in Shakopee, Minnesota goes back to the early 1800s. The first guns were brought over by the Dutch and used in their raids on Native Americans. After the treaty was signed in 1851, gun usage among settlers began to decrease. However, when warfare started occurring between Minnesota and Dakota Territory in 1862, farmers began buying rifles from local blacksmiths. This led to a rise in gun ownership throughout the state, as well as an increase in violence. In 1865, a group of men armed with shotguns and pistols attacked a white settlement near Shakopee Square. Nine people were killed and twelve injured; this event is also known as the Shakopee Massacre. In 1872, General Crook issued orders legalizing firearms in Dakota Territory. This led to an increased demand for weapons throughout the state – which contributed to both violence and massacres during this time period. By 1895, there were more than 2,500 rifle owners within Minnesota alone. During World War I (1914-1918), gun ownership rose again due to wartime efforts by both stateside and international allies alike. The name Shakopee comes from an Ottawa term meaning "a place where buffalo grazed." The first settler in what is now Shakopee was David Herron, who arrived in 1848. He and his family were the first white people to reside in what is now Shakopee County. The original bank building still stands on Main Street, which served as a clearinghouse for early settlers and their goods. In 1855, John Ladd became the first postmaster of ShakopEE. ShakopEE grew rapidly during the late 19th century because of its location near various railway lines and shipping points; it became one of the most important towns in southern Minnesota. For many years it was considered by many to be Minneapolis's second city because of its status as a commercial center. However, with growing industry throughout downtown Minneapolis, Shakopee slowly lost its position as an economic center over time. In recent years, however,SHAKOPEE has begun to rebound into prominence as a cultural and educational center due to its rich history and variety of cultural attractions such as museums and theaters district located on two blocks adjacent to Main Street which houses several restaurants including Lincoln Park café

Shakopee’s economy is mostly based on agriculture; however, it also produces some manufactures such as cheese and flour products. The town also has a few businesses that offer services such as mechanics or accounting services. There is also a park located in downtown Shakopee which provides public access to sports fields and other recreational activities.
