Shakopee is a small town in southcentral Minnesota, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Shakopee was first settled by the Menominee Indians in the 17th century. In 1868, Shakopee became a town when it was annexed by Minneapolis. It lost its town status in 1940 but regained it after cityhood. The village of Shakopee was founded on December 12, 1835 by Methodist missionaries John Wesley and James Hutton as part of their work among the Menominee Indians. They named their settlement after Mount Holyoke (the name of a hill near Boston), which they saw from their churchtower on Lake Pepin. By 1840, however, the Methodists had left and most of the settlers were Norwegian immigrants who had come to Minnesota for various reasons including land ownership or access to education opportunities outside of Norway. Settlement continued until 1867 when Minneapolis took over all local government and Shakopee reverted back to its original informal form of government with elected officials appointed by the mayor and council members rather than by representatives from each household or block voted upon collectively like towns did in Minneapolis. In 1870, Mayor Gustavus Adolphus Guthrie proposed annexing what is now Shakopee into Minneapolis because he believed that this would increase transportation links between Minneapolis and rural areas north of downtown and provide more jobs for residents there as well as generate tax revenue for the city. The proposal was defeated 9-3 but Guthrie's idea became law when Governor Abraham Lincoln signed it into law on April 14, 1870. During World War II Shaka Peake contributed many troops to serve in both Europe and North Africa where they performed heroically under difficult conditions while also supporting American efforts against Axis forces%. Afterward many people returned home and shakpeedy shifted back to its earlier agricultural roots; however some businesses still thrived such as The General Store which remain open today despite changes in naming conventions over time (e.g., Wacoal during Prohibition). Over time other businesses have opened up such as a convenience store (KFC) across from KSC- now called Bedrock Rhythm music & nightlife

Afterward, Shakopee experienced rapid growth as hordes of refugees flooded into the area after being displaced by combat operations in Europe or Japan; many businesses were born out of this influx including: The Fenton Store (now closed), Bakery Westphal Bros., Gopherland Dairy & Allyn's Grocery (now closed), Hennepin County Nursing Home (now defunct). The current form of Shakopee began to take shape around 1950 with incorporation of several nearby villages into the town limits: Bloomington-Normal/Mankato Township (later Mankato City), Elk River/Hennepin County Heights/Bloomington-Normal Township (later Bloomington-normal/Mankato City), Eden Prairie/Cedar Falls Township (later Cedar Falls) and White Earth Village/Goodhope Township (later Goodhope).
