In 1956–57 for the first time in history ShakopEE had an annual music festival which took place at Freedom Park near downtown ShakopEE with performances by rock bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones along with local poets such as Saul Bellow and Archibald MacLeish. Shakopee is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Shakopee River. The population was 11,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Shakopee were French Canadian farmers who arrived from Quebec in 1781 and negotiated a land purchase with Dakota Sioux leaders named Arikara. They named their new settlement after Pierre-Michel Chouteau, Marquis de Lally's aide who had come tochukwu (present-day Fargo) to explore North Dakota in 1819 and 1820 as part of the Red River Expedition under General David Dixon. In 1824, George Armstrong Custer led an expedition through present-day Minnesota and into Dakota Territory; heading ultimately for Deadwood Canyon where he lost his life during a skirmish with the Sioux near present-day Shakopee on July 16, 1865. Shakopee was founded by Captain John Richardson in 1878 as a retail store on what is now Main Street just south of Indianola Avenue; it became an agricultural center with cotton production becoming important after trees were planted along the river for navigation during that time period. A post office was established at Shakopee in 1886, and town status was granted in 1902 when it merged with neighboring Stonington to form what is today Shakopee Township. The first Methodist Church was built here around 1912 and First Presbyterian had services here from 1916 until its merger into United Church of Christ in 1961 The economy then shifted away from agriculture to manufacturing beginning about 1960s but continued to grow slowly until 2000 when came dramatic changes due to global trade shifts which created jobs throughout much of Midwest economies including those within neighboring Minneapolis/StPaul areas as well as other parts of America In recent years there has been investment by local businesses into downtown redevelopment which includes several high end restaurants and shops along Main Street while also expanding light rail service making this one of fastest growing cities within North America
Shakopee, Minnesota was the first town in the area that is now Shakopee, Minnesota. The original settlers of this area were farmers who started moving to this part of the country in the 1840s. By 1860, there were over 50 people living in Shakopee. In 1872, Shakopee became a county and was renamed after John Shakopee, an early settler.
