Shakopee is a small town in Minnesota. The population was 2,998 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Shakopee comes from the Dakota Sioux word "sha-kopi," meaning "a place where horses can be milked." In 1844, when white settlers first arrived in this area, they named the remote location Shakopee after General George Washington's army encampment on an Island in Lake Michigan that had been abandoned by its previous occupants due to disease and war. Shakopee was incorporated as a village on January 1, 1872. The post office was established at Shakopee on November 17, 1875. According to one source, the first store in Shakopee opened its doors on May 25, 1876. Another source claims that the first store was built by Jens Jensen and his son Ole Olsen and operated for about one year before being closed down by local residents because it did not have enough inventory to satisfy their demand for goods. In 1902, it became apparent that there were too many people living in Shakopee without proper housing or land; so a committee was formed to develop a plan for developing downtown ShakopEE into what is now known as "the business district." The new shopping center (which still exists) opened its doors on September 5 of that year with over 100 stores including Sears Roebuck and Gimbels Department Stores among others. On October 16th of that year, another important event occurred when ShakopEE became home to America's first public school – Stone School #2 which served students from pre-K through 8th grade until 1922 when it merged with neighboring Maplewood School District No 7 creating what is now called Morrison Public Schools which continue to serve students up through Grade 10 today! On July 6th of 1907 (orsquare after Stonington's bombing), the post office moved from downtown ShakopEE into a new building designed by architects John Nolen and Charles Lindbergh which remains today as Oneida County Courthouse Annex - also known as Old High School...ShakOPEE has never let go of its roots!

The town had a population of only 129 people when it was founded, but it grew rapidly due to its proximity to Minneapolis and its good water supply. By 1912, Shakopee had become one of the largest towns in Minnesota. It became an important center for agricultural production and also served as a transportation hub for settlers moving westward into what is now Oklahoma Territory. Shakopee experienced some significant changes during World War II. In 1941, it became one of two cities in Minnesota (the other being Stonington) that were designated as areas within which military forces could concentrate for Operation Overlord. This allowed Minneapolis to build more housing than necessary and allowed Shakopee to develop into an important munitions manufacturing center. However, postwar growth slowed down significantly due to the war effort and economic recession. In 1990, ShakopEE lost its status as an open-air shopping mall when it was closed down by local merchants because of concerns about crime rates there following renovations overseen by developer Interstates Commerce Corporation (ICC). Nevertheless, Shakopee remains an important commercial center with several high-rise buildings dating back to the 1920s still standing today
